Given concerns over their potential adverse health effects, we identified predictors and evaluated temporal changes of PBDE serum concentrations. Methods PBDE serum concentrations were measured in young children (2-8 years old; N = 67), parents of young children (<55 years old; N = 90), and PBDEs biomagnify (increase in concentration) in food webs, exposing high trophic level species to levels that may cause health effects. 10 In mammals, PBDEs can also be transferred from mother to young via the placenta 11,12 and via lactation 13,14, creating an exposure route for developing young. Litter effects are substantial, and using more than one pup from a few litters, as reported by Eriksson et al.

What are the health effects of PBDEs? Animal studies have shown that PBDE exposure during pregnancy and after birth caused problems with brain development in offspring. These studies observed problems with learning, memory, and behavior in mice and rats. Animal studies also found that PBDEs can alter thyroid and other hormone levels.

Slight differences by gender and race/ethnicity were also observed for several PBDEs (Sjodin et al., 2008 b ). There is no definite information on health effects of PBDEs in people. Rats and mice that ate food with moderate amounts of PBDEs for a few days had effects on the thyroid gland. Those that ate smaller amounts for weeks or months had effects on the thyroid and the liver.

PBDE effects on the developing brain are receiving considerable attention in the public-health community. The possible association between PBDE exposure and neurodevelopmental effects was originally considered for a topic at the committee’s workshop on February 3, 2016, which was designed to explore potential case studies and to help the committee select the topics for its systematic reviews.

CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests an association between PBDE exposure and children's cardiovascular responses to stress as well as parental and self-reported anger in the child. These variables are particularly important as they may be of potential relevance to the future development of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
